Vaporizers are just like computers: you can buy one that is pre-built, or you can build your own.
Vape mods allow you to customize your vaping experience.
Think of it as a DIY approach where you can interchange batteries for different vapor thickness, or switch to rebuildable atomizers.
If you’re tired of normal vaporizers, vape mods may be the right choice for you.
What Types of Vape Mods Are Available?
Think of basic mod packages as kits. These will have items you need to get started and will contain all of your basic vape pen parts. But, you’ll also find that there are a variety of mod type offerings on the market, including:
Box mods are box-shaped units. These are small and lightweight, and often contain a battery, but they don’t contain an atomizer in most cases. A lot of durable box mods are available, such as the Innokin Cool Fire IV, which is the perfect choice for extreme use, such as someone in the construction industry may require.
These box mods are more of the housing units for your vaporizer.
Many people prefer box mods because of their size. Most units are about the size of the original iPod and allow for:
- A larger, long-lasting battery.
- Larger tank for holding vape oil.
If you’re choosing a box mod, you’ll want to pay close attention to the product’s description. Some models will come with a built-in battery. You’ll also want to pay closer attention to the proper atomizer size of the unit so that you can choose an atomizer that is compatible.
Meant for advanced users.
Mechanical mods are the actual vape tubes that the vaporizer contains. Basically, these mods contain a metal tube (stainless steel, copper, aluminum or brass) and contain the circuitry needed for the vape pen battery to work properly.
These mods are dangerous if you don’t use the right battery with them, so be cautious.
These are definitely for advanced users, but for those that purse vaping as a hobby, mechanical mods are the holy grail and allow for unlimited customization.
Another mod that is meant for advanced users. The sub-ohm mod kits are meant to allow you to achieve a thick, huge vapor cloud when vaping.
What is sub-ohm?
In technical terms, these are atomizer coils that maintain a less than one ohm resistance. A complex topic, sub-ohm allows for more wattage to be passed to the vaporizer to allow for thicker, large clouds of vapor to be experienced.
You’ll also notice a far more potent flavor as a result of sub-ohm vaping.
Temperature Control Mods
A must-have for advanced users, the temperature of your vaporizer has an impact on everything from the taste of the vapor to the thickness. If the temperature isn’t just right, you’ll burn dry herb and notice a significant difference in taste.
Interestingly, these mods restrict temperature rather than control it.
What occurs is that the mod restricts the temperature of the coil. No actual temperature monitoring is provided. Instead, the technology works off of resistance change to determine the temperature and effectively controls the temperature setting.
Since no exact measurement of temperature is present, controls are typically within 10 degrees accuracy.
What’s neat is that many of these vape mods have memory settings. So, if you find your perfect vaping temperature, the mod will remember it so that you can achieve the perfect vape time and time again.
Variable Voltage / Wattage Mods
These two mods change the amount of voltage or wattage sent to the vaporizer.
Why would you want to change voltage or wattage?
It is all about the vapor produced. Many batteries restrict the amount of wattage produced from the allotted voltage.
A good example of this is a 3.7v battery.
When these batteries are used with a 2.4Q vaporizer, there will be only 5.5 watts of power produced. You need more power if you want a larger or thicker vapor. Many people will change their battery to achieve this increase in wattage.
A change in the tank size to a 1.5 would boost watts to over 9 for a stronger hit.
Some of these mods will offer 15w power, while others will go up to 150w or more. It’s a personal preference in terms of how many watts is the perfect choice for you. But, it’s definitely a level of vaping refinement you won’t find with other units.
RDA Vape Mods
The atomizer seems rather scary to beginners, but it’s an essential part of the customization process or modding your unit.
What this does is allow you to change the coils inside of the atomizer, and it’s really a two-step process:
- Take apart the atomizer.
- Replace the coil.
Okay, technically I lied. You’ll also need to put it back together, which would be the third step in the process.
What you’ll be doing is removing all of the old coils that exist. Once removed, you’ll need to wrap the new coils around the new wick.
Why would you do this?
Coils provide resistance. When you install a new coil, you’ll also want to install a new wick, which the coil will be wrapping around.
After all, you don’t want to go through all of this work only to find out that the wick is bad and have to remove your newly installed coil, right?
The number of times you wrap the coil around the wick will determine the amount of resistance produced. If you want more resistance, make sure that you wrap the coil a few extra times for best results.
Virtually all vaporizers will allow you to swap out the battery that’s included with the unit. This isn’t so much of a vape mod in the normal sense, but it is a modification that will allow you to change the way you vape.
A vape battery pen produces the voltage needed for the coils to heat up.
As we discussed earlier, a battery’s voltage will produce a fairly standard wattage output. Unless you change the atomizer, you won’t be able to produce more voltage to heat the unit. Changing a battery to a stronger model that offers more voltage or mAh will allow you to produce a thicker vapor.
This will allow your vape oil or herb to heat up further and more efficiently. But, you need to make sure that the unit is able to accommodate the increased voltage.
Vape Mod Starter Kits
Many companies are starting to develop starter kits. These are, essentially, kits that you’ll be able to use to create a complete vaporizer. This means that the battery, containing unit, and the atomizer have all been included, and simply need to be attached to finish the unit.
This is a great choice for beginners that want to start modding their own vaporizer without the need to buy several different pieces.
And, you’ll have the ability to mod the unit in the future if you please. This isn’t as robust of a solution if you want to create a truly customized unit, but it is a great starting point. If you already have parts that you can use, a starter kit may also be the right choice for you.
Why Are More Using Using Vape Mods?
There are a lot of people reading this post right now wondering why in the world they would go through all of this trouble when the Pax 2 or other standard units are great. And the truth is that a lot of people won’t want to mod their own vaporizer. This is more of a hobby or a customized approach that 95% of vaping fans won’t pursue.
It definitely takes more work and diligence to build and customize your own unit.
But, that is the same reason why people love to mod vaporizers. If you’ve tried one unit and found that the taste is simply not up to your standards, or another unit was near perfect but you wished that the vapor was thicker, this is the reason people mod their units.
You’ll have full control over your vaporizer and you’ll customize it so that it’s the ideal unit for you.
There is a learning process, but it’s not too difficult to assemble your own unit in just 10 minutes once you’re accustomed to the process. When you fully understand how vaporizers work, this is when you’ll be able to pop in a different battery to produce stronger tasting flavor or rebuild an atomizer so that the resistance is ideal for your preference.
